Q/A: Frequently Asked Questions
We are publishing several questions that we’ve been asked throughout the application process. Please note that we cannot comment on the application process. Please do not message our team about questions relating to the application process. Here are some additional questions that have been asked throughout.
Q: Do you offer a remote internship?
During COVID-19, for the 2020-21 internship, we offered a remote program and during 2021, we had limited in-person sessions. The problem with a remote internship is, a lot of the things that happen within our world is best taught/learned in person and not from sitting behind a screen. It detracts from the overall experience by having a fully remote program.
Q: Why do I have to be US-based?
There’s a few factors that go into this and it largely boils down to compliance. VC is a heavily regulated industry and we need to ensure that first and foremost, we are doing everything in a compliant manner. It makes it harder to enforce contracts and rules when we have foreign individuals involved.
Q: What if I don’t have LinkedIn or Youtube?
If you don’t have LinkedIn due to your age (minimum age is 16 for a LinkedIn account), there’s a spot in the application form that addresses this.
If you don’t have Youtube or don’t have the ability to upload to Youtube, you can use an alternative service such as Vimeo or Google Drive. If you put it in Google Drive, make sure we can access the file.
Q: Why don’t more VCs offer this program?
The short answer is the cost of Compliance.
This is an extremely expensive endeavor and it’s extremely costly from both a human and financial capital (insurance costs, additional liability) perspective to run a compliant program for high school students. It isn’t a risk that firms want to take.
Q: Are there career path options for those interested in pursuing VC post high school?
It’s complicated…
Most people believe the traditional route is the only way to VC. Our internship offers real-world VC experience, and while a direct path to VC post-high school exists for some qualified individuals, it’s not guaranteed and rarely offered.
Q: What are the typical working hours?
It’s a replication of the type of lifestyle you would expect to have in VC full-time as an Analyst. It can vary greatly, depending on deal flow, compliance to-dos, travel, conferences, etc.
Q: What’s the office culture like working at 1435 Capital?
It’s a very lean team, so it’s a very flat structure in the office and on calls. Everyone is willing to coach, mentor, and provide guidance. We are all highly approachable and eager to help.
Q: What skills are most important as an Analyst?
Communication and public speaking are incredibly important in VC. As an Analyst, you will be utilizing your analytical, critical thinking, and research & writing skills almost daily.
Q: What is the typical structure of the day-to-day? Does it vary?
There’s very little structure to your day-to-day. One day may consist of you touring a factory, working on an investment memo, drafting a pitch deck, hosting back-to-back calls, or attending a conference or tea party.
Q: In your opinion, what qualities do you look for in people getting started in VC?
Two of the most important qualities for a successful VC are a true passion for learning about industries and an ever-curious mindset.
Q: Does our current location play a role in admissions?
In theory, no. However, you are required to be in New Jersey during the Summer. Also, we can’t accept anyone that’s not US-based, here on an F-1 student visa, or would require sponsorship.
